In the old, pre-wolf, days in Yellowstone, it was fairly common find winter-killed carcasses, sometimes even close to the road. Coyotes, dominant winter predator/scavenger at the time, had a pretty fat time of it, their only competition being ravens, magpies and eagles. I came upon these coyotes feeding on an elk carcass one day on the northern range. I set up and began photographing them. They were a mated pair, and they would feed peacefully when at opposite ends of the carcass, but when they came close to each other, t was all snarls and growls. The one on the left seemed to be more aggressive, so I turned the lens to the right hoping a scuffle would move them into the frame. When I saw the one on the left move, I triggered the shutter and took four or five frames. I had no idea what I'd gotten, but whn the film came back, I was sure glad to see this.
